NEW YORK CITY – A tragic shooting unfolded during rush hour on July 28, when a gunman stormed a prominent Midtown Manhattan skyscraper, killing four people and injuring five others before taking his own life.
Among those killed was a New York City police officer.
Shooter Opens Fire at 345 Park Avenue
The incident occurred at 345 Park Avenue, a building that houses the NFL headquarters and major financial firms.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed police received multiple reports of an active shooter at the site.
Surveillance showed the shooter exiting a vehicle and entering the building with an M4 rifle.
Attack Begins in Lobby
The suspect opened fire on an NYPD officer working private security.
He then shot a woman taking cover, a security guard behind the front desk, and another man in the lobby.
From there, the gunman took the elevator to the 33rd floor, where he shot and killed another individual.
He then walked down a hallway and shot himself in the chest.
Suspect Identified
The gunman was identified as Shane Tamura, 27, of Nevada.
Authorities said he had a documented mental health history.
The motive behind the attack remains under investigation.
Casualties and Victims
Commissioner Tisch confirmed that five people were shot, including:
- NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, 36
- Two men and one woman, all killed
- One man critically injured
Four additional victims sustained minor injuries while fleeing the scene.
Victim identities are being withheld until families are notified.
Officer Islam: Remembered as a Hero
Mayor Eric Adams and Commissioner Tisch praised Officer Islam for his bravery.
Islam, an immigrant from Bangladesh, served with NYPD for four years and was assigned to the 47th Precinct in the Bronx.
He is survived by two young sons and a pregnant wife.
“He made the ultimate sacrifice… He died as he lived, a hero,” said Tisch.
Shooter’s Vehicle and Evidence
Tamura’s vehicle was double-parked outside the building and registered in Nevada.
Inside, officers found:
- A rifle case
- Loaded revolver
- Ammunition and magazines
- Prescribed medication
- A backpack
The NYPD bomb squad cleared the car of explosives.
The vehicle had recently traveled through Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, and New Jersey before reaching NYC.

Commissioner Tisch confirmed the shooter was a lone actor and posed no ongoing threat.

Armand Bramellari, 36, waited outside for his mother, a cleaner working inside the building.
She was on the second floor during the shooting.
When she finally emerged, the two embraced near an NYPD barricade.
“She brought us here, and she’s got to die at work?” he said emotionally.
