Trump Has an “Alcoholic’s Personality” and Believes “There’s Nothing He Can’t Do,” Says His Chief of Staff

White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles has provided the most definitive description yet of President Donald Trump’s second-term governing philosophy. In a series of candid interviews, Wiles stripped away political nuances to reveal a simple, uncompromising reality. She stated that the President governs with “a view that there’s nothing he can’t do. Nothing, zero, nothing.”

This assessment offers a rare glimpse behind the curtain of the West Wing. It suggests a presidency operating without the internal guardrails that defined Trump’s first term in office. While previous chiefs of staff often attempted to check the President’s impulses, Wiles has taken a different approach. The article notes she has retained Trump’s confidence by running a functional operation that does not attempt to constrain him.

The “Alcoholic’s Personality”

Wiles contextualized this boundless approach to power with a striking psychological observation. She told Vanity Fair that the President possesses “an alcoholic’s personality,” even though he is a known teetotaler.

“High-functioning alcoholics or alcoholics in general, their personalities are exaggerated when they drink,” Wiles explained. She added that she is “a little bit of an expert in big personalities,” noting that she grew up with her father, the legendary sportscaster and alcoholic Pat Summerall.

The implication is that Trump operates with exaggerated impulses and a sense of invincibility. This personality trait fuels the belief that there are zero limits to his authority.

Ignoring Advice and Seeking Retribution

The belief that there is “nothing he can’t do” has manifested in specific actions where the President ignored the counsel of his top aides. Wiles admitted that her advice went unheeded on several controversial issues. She urged Trump not to pardon the most violent rioters from January 6, 2021, but he ignored her. She also pushed unsuccessfully to delay announcing major tariffs amid a “huge disagreement” among advisers.

This unconstrained mindset also extends to the President’s appetite for revenge. Wiles conceded that retribution drives many of his actions. When asked about mortgage fraud accusations against New York Attorney General Letitia James, Wiles replied, “Well, that might be the one retribution.”

She also addressed the failed prosecution of former FBI Director James Comey. Wiles admitted that while she does not think Trump wakes up thinking about retribution, he will take the opportunity if it arises. “I can’t tell you why you shouldn’t think that,” she said regarding the vindictive appearance of the prosecution.

Foreign Policy Without Limits

The “zero limits” philosophy is perhaps most volatile in the realm of foreign affairs. Wiles revealed that the President is pursuing regime change in Venezuela through a “boat-bombing campaign” intended to make President Nicolás Maduro “cry uncle.”

She acknowledged that Trump would need congressional authorization for such strikes, yet the President continues to govern with the view that his power is absolute.

A White House in Shock

The publication of these comments left White House aides reeling. Allies expressed shock and confusion in group chats, with one senior adviser simply responding with “Yikes.”

Wiles has since claimed her words were taken out of context in a “hit piece,” but she did not deny making the comments. Her description remains the defining sentiment of the administration. It paints a picture of a President who believes he faces no obstacles, supported by a Chief of Staff who understands that her role is not to say “stop,” but to manage the consequences of a leader who believes there is nothing he cannot do.
