House Speaker Mike Johnson issued a stark warning over the weekend, telling young conservatives that Republicans must hold onto their House majority in the 2026 midterm elections or face the likelihood of President Donald Trump being impeached.

Johnson delivered his remarks Sunday during Turning Point USA’s annual America Fest conference in Phoenix, a major gathering of conservative activists, influencers, and student organizers.

Speaking directly to younger voters, Johnson framed the upcoming midterms as a defining moment for the Republican Party and for Trump’s presidency.

“Everything is on the line in the midterms in 2026, and we have much more to do,” Johnson said. “If we lose the House majority, the radical left as you’ve already heard is going to impeach President Trump. They are going to create absolute chaos. We cannot let that happen.”

Midterms Framed as a Referendum on Trump

Johnson’s comments reflect growing concern among Republican leaders about the political environment heading into the 2026 elections. Midterm races traditionally pose challenges for the party holding the White House, and recent polling has added to GOP anxiety.

Trump’s approval ratings have dropped to levels comparable to the lowest points of his first term, according to surveys released in recent weeks. Those numbers have fueled speculation that Democrats could regain control of the House if current trends continue.

The Speaker’s message sought to link House control directly to Trump’s political survival, portraying Republican losses as an open invitation for Democrats to pursue impeachment.

Polling Signals Trouble for Republicans

New data suggests voters remain pessimistic about the direction of the country. Last week, CNN highlighted polling showing that roughly two-thirds of Americans believe the nation is on the wrong track.

CNN senior data analyst Harry Enten said those figures spell trouble for Republicans if they do not improve their standing with voters before the midterms.

“The Republican Party is on track to lose the House of Representatives if the wrong track numbers look anything like they do right now,” Enten said in response to the survey results.

Such findings underscore why Republican leaders are increasingly focused on mobilizing their base, particularly younger voters, ahead of what is expected to be a highly competitive election cycle.

Democrats Keep Impeachment on the Table

Democratic interest in impeaching Trump is not new. Representative Al Green of Texas introduced articles of impeachment against the president in April. At the time, Democrats lacked the numbers to move the effort forward, and the proposal was quickly tabled.

With Republicans controlling the House, impeachment efforts remain largely symbolic. That could change if Democrats reclaim the majority. In that scenario, articles of impeachment could advance through committees and reach the House floor, assuming most Democrats support such action.

The likelihood of impeachment would depend on the size of a Democratic majority and internal party consensus, but Johnson’s remarks suggest Republicans view the risk as serious and immediate.

A Call to Conservative Voters

By addressing the crowd at America Fest, Johnson emphasized the importance of grassroots activism and turnout. He urged conservatives to stay engaged, warning that complacency could lead to significant political consequences.

His speech reinforced a central message Republicans are expected to repeat in the months ahead. Control of the House, Johnson argued, is the primary safeguard against renewed impeachment proceedings and broader political turmoil.

As the 2026 midterms draw closer, Johnson’s warning highlights how deeply intertwined House control, Trump’s presidency, and the broader direction of the Republican Party have become.

  1. Really, are we using ChatSlang now? Johnson said “They gonna …” because its a younger audience? If not, get hearing aids and/or don’t exaggerate the title as another form of “read me” bait. And for the record, I am a Democrat. Damn.
