Nick Reiner, the son of the late filmmaker Rob Reiner, is asking a Los Angeles County court to release money from a trust created by his parents so he can fund his defense against charges that he killed them.
On Monday, Reiner filed a petition arguing that the trustees have no lawful basis to withhold the money.
The filing says Reiner, 32, was supposed to receive a trust distribution when he turned 30, but that payment was never made.
The trust is believed to contain at least $1.5 million, according to Associated Press reporting.
Reiner is the son of Hollywood director and actor Rob Reiner and photographer and film producer Michele Singer Reiner.
Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner were stabbed to death inside their home in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles in December 2025.
Nick Reiner was arrested after their deaths.
He has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the alleged fatal stabbings of his parents.
“Like anyone accused of a crime, Nick is presumed innocent, and he is entitled to mount his defense with the resources that are lawfully his own,” the petition says.
Reiner has pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder.
