It is official.
The man in the White House is trembling in his boots.
On Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump practically got on his knees and begged House Republicans to save his skin in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections.
His motivation isn’t policy or the good of the nation.
It is pure self-preservation.
According to reports from the event, Trump was explicitly clear about his fears.
“You gotta win the midterms ’cause, if we don’t win the midterms, it’s just gonna be – I mean, they’ll find a reason to impeach me,” Trump said at a retreat for House Republican lawmakers in Washington.
He added a grim prophecy for himself.
“I’ll get impeached.”
The “Unity” Charade
The President is desperate for his party to play nice.
He urged his fellow Republicans to fight in a more unified fashion on issues ranging from gender politics to healthcare and election reforms.
Apparently, he thinks valid policy involves obsessing over gender politics while the country burns.
He also wants them to sell his policies to a public angry about cost of living issues.
Good luck selling that disaster to families trying to buy groceries.
Trump knows his agenda is on the line in November’s elections, when all the seats in the House of Representatives and a third of the Senate’s seats will be contested.
Ego Trip at the Kennedy Center
The setting for this display of anxiety was truly rich.
The speech took place at the Kennedy Center, a Washington performing arts center that was recently renamed to include a mention of Trump.
Yes, you read that correctly.
He just had to plaster his name on a cultural institution.
While standing in a building that now strokes his ego, he tried to predict an epic win for Republicans.
But he couldn’t help but whine about history.
“They say that when you win the presidency, you lose the midterm,” Trump said at the Kennedy Center.
He then insulted the intelligence of the American voter.
“I wish you could explain to me what the hell’s going on with the mind of the public,” Trump said.
Maybe the public is just tired of the chaos, Donald.
Cracks in the MAGA Wall
House Republicans have shown enormous deference to Trump so far.
They have been busy ceding much of Congress’ authority over spending and other matters to his administration.
But even his loyal lapdogs are getting restless.
They have started to show glimmers of independence.
The House could vote this week to override a veto Trump issued last month that canceled water projects in Colorado and Utah.
It is not clear whether the effort will get the two-thirds majority needed, but the rebellion is brewing.
A History of Crimes
We all remember how we got here.
Trump was impeached twice by the Democratic-led House of Representatives during his 2017-2021 term in office.
They rightly blamed him, faulting him for what they said were abuses of power involving Ukraine and ahead of the January 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol.
Naturally, the Republican-controlled Senate voted to acquit him in both cases.
Now he is terrified the third time will be the charm.
And honestly, we can only hope he is right.
