A woman was shot and killed by a federal law enforcement agent in Minneapolis, Minnesota, following what authorities described as a violent vehicle-related incident. The shooting occurred amid heightened tensions over the presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers in the city.
Incident Followed Alleged Vehicle Attack
According to the Department of Homeland Security, the shooting was triggered by what officials referred to as a ramming incident. Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin told NBC News that the woman allegedly used her vehicle to target federal officers.
In a statement, ICE said the woman attempted to run over law enforcement officers with her vehicle, describing the act as an attempt to kill them. The agency characterized the incident as domestic terrorism.
ICE said the officer involved fired his weapon out of fear for his life, the lives of fellow officers, and public safety. The agency stated that the officer followed his training and acted in self-defense.
Victim Pronounced Dead at the Scene
The woman, whose identity has not been released, was later pronounced dead. No information has been provided regarding injuries to law enforcement officers.
Tear Gas Deployed After Shooting
Following the shooting, federal authorities deployed tear gas on a crowd that had gathered near the scene, according to reporting by Fox News correspondent Mike Tobin. It remains unclear how large the crowd was or whether any arrests were made.
Minneapolis Mayor Condemns ICE Presence
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey criticized the presence of ICE agents in the city following the incident and called for their immediate departure.
In a post on X, Frey said he was aware of the shooting near 34th Street and Portland Avenue. He stated that federal immigration enforcement operations were causing chaos in Minneapolis and said the city stood with immigrant and refugee communities.
Investigation Ongoing
