MSNBC senior medical analyst Dr. Vin Gupta went public Sunday with a stark assessment of President Donald Trump’s cognitive state, listing a cluster of symptoms he said point unmistakably to dementia.
Posting on X, Gupta laid out what he sees as a pattern of decline: erratic behavior, an inability to complete sentences, visible confusion, an illogical chain of thought, and consistent difficulty finding words.
He added that the symptoms have been developing and worsening gradually over time.
The post arrived hours after Trump fired off a jarring message on Truth Social threatening Iran in terms that left many observers alarmed.
In the post, Trump declared that Tuesday would be “Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day” in Iran, warned the country to “Open the Fuckin’ Strait, you crazy bastards, or you’ll be living in Hell,” and signed off with “Praise be to Allah.”
The message set off an immediate reaction across party lines.
Former Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia urged Congress to “intervene in Trump’s madness,” writing in a lengthy post that Trump “has gone insane” and accusing congressional members of being “complicit.”
Democrats went further, with several calling for Trump’s removal under the 25th Amendment.
Rep. Yassamin Ansari (D-AZ) called Trump “a deranged lunatic” and “a national security threat to our country and the rest of the world,” stating that the 25th Amendment exists precisely for situations like this.
Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) wrote that if he were in Trump’s Cabinet, he would be spending Easter consulting constitutional lawyers about the amendment, calling Trump’s post “completely, utterly unhinged” and warning that thousands more lives were at risk.
Former Trump staffer Miles Taylor backed Murphy’s call, writing that Trump was “pledging war crimes” and that it was “time for the 25th.”
Anthony Scaramucci, another former Trump staffer, invoked the Founders, writing that this was the moment the country’s founders envisioned when they created a mechanism for removing a president they considered unfit.
Former Republican Rep. Joe Walsh of Illinois tied the episode to a separate controversy in which one of Trump’s religious advisors had compared him to Jesus Christ just two days prior, calling Trump “a stain on this country and the world” and closing with a call for 25th Amendment action.
